David R. Whitten Principal | | David has over 30 years experience in the information and communications technology industry. Most recently, David was vice president of marketing at Spotwave Wireless, a market leading provider of indoor wireless coverage solutions, where he led the company’s corporate strategy, product marketing, marketing communications and product management initiatives.
Prior to Spotwave, David was senior vice president of corporate development and strategy at Intrado, a global provider of integrated data and telecommunications solutions. In this role he provided leadership in the development of corporate strategic initiatives, including international business expansion. David was also responsible for Intrado’s corporate business development, product marketing, marketing communications, corporate events and government and external affairs functions. While at Intrado, David launched the company’s international market entry, establishing an operating structure, including an international holding company in Ireland, a branch office in the UK, a joint venture in China, and a subsidiary entity in Singapore. He was appointed as chairman of the board of directors and general manager of Intrado International Ireland Ltd. and Intrado International Singapore Ltd. and vice chairman of the board of directors of Intrado (XieAn) Technology (China) Company Ltd.. David also provided oversight of the marketing and sales initiatives of a Swiss subsidary entity acquired by Intrado in 2004. Intrado, a $150M annual revenue, NASDAQ traded (TRDO) company, was acquired by West Corporation in April 2006 for $512M.
Prior to joining, Intrado, David was a founder and chief executive officer of Contellect, a leading edge, startup, content integration company.
Before Contellect, David spent 9 years at Gartner where he was senior vice president and general manager of research, responsible for the company's core business unit, a 900 person global organization that generated over US$500M annual revenue. After joining Gartner as research director for electronic messaging systems, he also served as vice president and director of research for the electronic workplace and advanced computing environments research group and as senior vice president of practice management. In recognition of his thought leadership in the IT industry, David was appointed as a Gartner research fellow in 1997.
Before joining Gartner, David worked at Digital Equipment Corporation for 13 years in various capacities, including corporate marketing manager for office information systems, corporate marketing manager for electronic messaging systems, and business manager for Digital's internal e-mail service.
A pioneer in the development and deployment of e-mail in business, David was active in the establishment of the Electronic Messaging Association in 1983, serving on the board of directors and as vice chair. He was also a member of the executive committee of the X.400 API Association. David also spent 11 years in administrative and management positions with the Australian government and in the travel industry. David has a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in business administration from Boston University.
